What is brand identity, and how is it different from a logo?

Plenty of brands think "we have a logo, so our identity is done." In fact the logo is only one part of a brand identity.
The logo: your brand's signature
A logo is the mark that identifies your brand at a glance. A good one is simple, memorable and readable even when small. It also needs full-colour, single-colour and icon versions for different backgrounds.
Brand identity: signing the same way everywhere
Brand identity is the full set of rules that shape how your brand looks:
- The logo and how to use it
- Brand colours and typefaces
- Business cards, letterhead, envelopes and folders
- Social media and presentation templates
- Packaging, labels and signage
Why it matters
Customers meet your brand on your website, on Instagram, on a product box and on your shop sign. Seeing the same colours, voice and layout everywhere builds trust, and the brand comes across as more professional and established.
Where to start?
A new brand can start with logo design alone and complete the identity as it grows. If you're refreshing an existing brand, handling the whole brand identity, logo included, gives the most consistent result.
